Different Rhinoplasty Procedures - The 4 Proven Techniques Used by Rhinoplasty Surgeons Today

Rhinoplasty is a medical procedure to improve the appearance of patients' noses or to correct breathing problems. Over the years, based on their patients' needs and preferences, plastic surgeons have created different rhinoplasty procedures to meet their patients' expectations.

Here is an overview of the different rhinoplasty procedures that plastic surgeons perform today:

1) Closed Rhinoplasty

This closed approach can be performed under general or local anesthesia with intravenous sedation. The surgeon makes incisions inside the edge of the nostril, which are completely hidden from view after the patient recovers. To correct a breathing problem, the surgeon separates the soft nasal tissues from the underlying structures. Then it reshapes the cartilage and bone.

To reduce the size of your nose, the bones in your nose will be carefully broken at the end of the procedure. If your nose needs construction, the surgeon may make grafts using cartilage from your ears, nose, rib, or bone. The surgeon may also use other materials such as silicone implants, human tissue, or cartilage grafts from a tissue bank.

The surgeon will place a splint over the bridge of your nose to preserve and protect the newly placed tissues and structures. Nasal inserts are sometimes placed inside the nostrils to provide extra support and stop any bleeding.

Closed rhinoplasty completely eliminates almost all risks of visible scarring. However, it does not provide the same amount of freedom to the surgeon regarding the possibilities of remodeling because the surgeon is not able to visualize the end result as well, compared to the open approach.

2) Open rhinoplasty

In this procedure, the surgeon makes an incision through the spine which is a small strip of skin located between the nostrils of your nose. This allows the surgeon to lift the skin off the tip of your nose and precisely shape the cartilage and bone in your nose. This is because your surgeon is able to better visualize the internal structures of the nose to achieve a better and more predictable end result.

When healed, the incision leaves a very small, almost unnoticeable scar on the underside of the nose. People with thicker skin, olive skin, or dark skinned people are more likely to get scarring.

3) Natural Rhinoplasty

Rhinoplasty surgeons are always challenged to find ways to produce a nose that is more natural and keeps its shape over time. In the past, patients who underwent rhinoplasty ended up with noses that looked "exaggerated" and disproportionately small compared to other facial features.

This happened when plastic surgeons removed many of the normal structures of the nose. Over time, as the tissue heals and contracts, the nose ends up looking very small and narrow, very upturned and compressed at its tip.

Today, rhinoplasty procedures are all about rearranging and reshaping the nasal structures, not just removing them. Nasal tissue is preserved as much as possible. When necessary, grafts are used to support the nose and open the breath.

It is best to perform natural rhinoplasty with open rhinoplasty. By getting a qualified rhinoplasty surgeon to perform rhinoplasty, you can reduce the risks of scarring and other rhinoplasty complications.

4) Non-surgical rhinoplasty

Non-surgical rhinoplasty benefits patients who want to improve the appearance of their nose almost immediately without having to undergo a surgical procedure. Patients recover more quickly and experience much less pain. They also only need to pay 10 percent of the cost of rhinoplasty surgery.

Non-surgical nose jobs involve injecting substances such as Botox to help mask the appearance of bumps and bumps on the nose. Patients do not need to fear that this will lead to a larger nose. The injection only flattens the nose to give it a smoother silhouette. This treatment is also ideal for patients who have not had a satisfactory result from their first nose surgery and who do not wish to undergo revision rhinoplasty.

Unfortunately, those with large nasal deformities and those looking to significantly reduce the size of their nose are not candidates for a non-surgical nose job. Instead, these patients will need rhinoplasty surgery.

Most patients return to work the same day of the procedure. The end result is instant. Most patients will need a touch up after about two years.

Among these different rhinoplasty procedures, which one suits you the most? Your surgeon will first have to carefully examine the features of your face, the structures of your nose, as well as the texture of your skin. Depending on your facial anatomy and the changes you want, your surgeon will then be able to choose the method that is most likely to work best for you.
