Migraines can be a common side effect of pregnancy. If you were prone to migraines before pregnancy, this will either improve significantly, or it will only get worse. What causes migraines during pregnancy ? The reason behind this is believed to be increased levels of hormones.


A migraine is very different from a tension headache or a cluster headache. Migraines usually occur as a result of the blood vessels in the brain dilating to extremely uncomfortable levels. Some women experience their first migraine during pregnancy .


Migraines are characterized by mild pain that eventually worsens into a strong, throbbing pain. It is usually on one side of the head. Migraines sometimes accompany vomiting and nausea, and some people may experience aura. An aura is the sensation of lights or spots in the eye. Some women may experience blind spots or other vision problems. Some people have reported sensitivity to noise, lights, and smells.


In general, migraines do not pose a risk to either the mother or the baby. If the pain persists for several days, or is unusually frequent, see your doctor or health care provider to rule out other possible causes. Preeclampsia can also cause headaches and vision disturbances.


While hormones are the main cause of migraines during pregnancy, other factors including diet may be involved. You may not be able to prevent migraines, but there are some triggers that can trigger migraines.


Common migraine triggers

  • Cheese, especially sharp cheddar cheese.
  • Chocolate.
  • anxiety or stress
  • muscle tension;
  • weather fluctuations.
  • coffee.

If you notice that you have a migraine after drinking that morning cup of coffee, try switching to decaffeinated or herbal teas. Relaxation techniques and yoga can help relieve anxiety or stress. A monthly massage is a good thing you can do for your body and it will help relieve muscle tension.


Make sure you take your prenatal vitamins to ensure good nutrition and try to stick to a healthy diet with plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits.


Migraine medications are not recommended during pregnancy. Your doctor may suggest taking Tylenol and sitting quietly in a dark room. Placing an ice pack or cold washcloth on the head can help narrow the blood vessels. Taking a cold shower can serve the same purpose. Another suggestion would be acupuncture or chiropractic manipulation.


Now that you know the causes of migraines during pregnancy, you can be better equipped to treat early headaches and possibly reduce pain.


Migraine treatment:

If you're taking a medication prescribed to prevent or treat migraines, it's important to let your doctor know if you're trying to get pregnant. Many migraine medications are not safe during pregnancy. Your doctor can explore your options with you regarding other medications. Don't try to take over-the-counter migraine medications during pregnancy, either. Tylenol is one of the only approved over-the-counter medications that you can take during pregnancy, and it does very little to treat migraines.


The best way to deal with migraines during pregnancy is to avoid having them. If you know what usually causes you migraines, do your best to avoid it. If you feel a migraine coming on, try relaxing in a cool, quiet place. Stress and high activity will only make it worse. Avoid exercise or strenuous activity as soon as you know that a migraine is about to occur. Increased blood flow can make it faster. Try lying with a cold cloth over your eyes.


The best thing you can do is avoid stress, which often triggers migraines.Take time for yourself every day. Spend time each day in a quiet place. Even if it's only 15 minutes, it gives your body a chance to relax. You can also try the letter. Massage can do wonders to relieve stress and relax your body. It can help you focus on your physical needs, and it can also help you sleep better, fatigue is also a common cause of migraines. Make sure you go to a massage therapist who is experienced in pregnancy massage.
